Asha Posley the first Pakistani heroine
Sabra Begum, better known as Asha Posley (1927 – 25 March 1998) was the first female heroine in a Pakistani film.
Asha Posley is the daughter of music composer Inayat Ali Nath who works with HMV in Delhi and the sister of famous film singer Kausar Parveen and other sister Rani Kiran. She debuted as a supporting actress in the Punjabi film Gawandi (1944), filmed in Lahore, followed by a lead role in the Hindi film Champa (1945), filmed in British India. She got her professional name Asha Posley from the famous music director Ghulam Haider. After Pakistan's independence in 1947, he emigrated with his family to the newly formed Pakistan.
She was the heroine in Pakistan's first Urdu language film, Teri Yaad (1948). She played the female lead opposite Nasirr Khan, the brother of the famous Indian actor Dilip Kumar who played the male lead in the film. Having played the female lead in only a few films, she has been cast in mostly supporting roles in most of her films, most notably opposite comedic actors Nazar and Asif Jha. During his film career, which has spanned more than 3 decades, he acted in 129 films.
Asha Posley received the 1982 Nigar Award Special Award for 30 Years of Excellence in Acting. Asha Posley died on March 26, 1998 at the age of 70 in Lahore, Pakistan.
